International Student Identity Card (ISIC)
The ISIC is the internationally recognized proof of full-time student status and is a student discount card in more than seventy countries, including Canada. You can fill out an application form for your FREE ISIC at the LUSU Office. If you cannot supply us with a passport size photo to use on your ISIC, no problem! LUSU can now take your photo right here in the office when you come to apply for your card. A $2.00 fee applies. Please allow two weeks for processing.
Free Local Calls
Without a quarter? No service on the cell phone? The LUSU Office has a phone available during office hours for students to make local calls. You’ll also find two direct lines to taxi companies in the Outpost.
Fax Service / LUSU Fax #: 807-343-8598
The LUSU Office has a fax machine that students can use for sending and receiving faxes during regular office hours. There is no fee for a student to send a resume or job application to a LOCAL fax number.
Receiving a fax:
Please make sure the fax being received is sent to the attention of the student (first
and last name) picking it up. Faxes received will remain on file in our office for two
weeks from the day received.
Room Bookings
LUSU Clubs can book space, rooms, video and audio equipment through our office. Forms are available at the LUSU Office and must be completed and returned at least ten working days prior to the day the space or equipment is needed. Once the booking is confirmed you will be notified via email. Room booking forms are available for downloading… check out “Online Forms”.
Graphic Design Service
LUSU’s Communication Department offers a graphic design service to all LUSU clubs. Posters, tickets, brochures, flyers, table cards, etc., can be designed for your event or fundraiser. Design and printing are included at at special low cost to our clubs. Please stop by the LUSU Office to submit a printing request. Allow two weeks for production.
Ride Board
Are you looking for some company on that long drive home for the holidays or do you need a ride somewhere out of town and and are willing to share gas costs? Check out the LUSU Ride Board located on the homepage of this website!
Poster Approval
LUSU must approve the content of ALL posters being placed on the LUSU boards. Posters that have not been approved and stamped by LUSU will be removed immediately. This service is free to students or clubs promoting non-profit events that benefit the student body. A maximum of 15 posters can be stamped and posted for a maximum of two weeks. Lists of the poster boards are available from the LUSU office. This service is also available to non-students but a fee of $1.00 per poster will apply. Please visit the LUSU Office for more details.
Academic Appeals & Grievances
If you feel you have been unfairly marked or that a professor has mistreated you LUSU can help. Our Vice-President Student Issues can provide you with all possible options available to you as a Lakehead University Student. Whether you wish to file an appeal or simply discuss your problems with a professor, LUSU’s VPSI is available to assist you. To contact the VPSI email vspi@lusu.ca or stop by the office.
Graduation Photos
Grad photos are done during the month of March. You will receive a LUSU email once the sign up sheets are available in the LUSU Office.

U-Pass
All full-time, undergraduate students who are registered in 4 full credit courses by September 23, 2011 can pick up their U-PASS at the LUSU Office during regular business hours. Please have your student card ready. Your U-PASS can be used any time and as many times as you’d like, from September 1, 2011 through to May 4, 2012. A fee of $10.00 will be charged for replacement stickers. Part-time and Graduate students can purchase the U-PASS for a fee of $75.00 per academic year.
Thunder Bay City Transit Bus Passes
For your convenience city transit passes are available at the LUSU Office during regular business hours. Cash, cheque, debit, Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Visit www.thunderbay.ca/transit for transit schedules.
2011-2012 City Transit Rates:
- Exact Cash Fare: $2.50 (children 8 and under – free, when accompanied by an adult)
- 20-Ride Punch Pass: $35.00
- Monthly Pass (adult and discount): $69.50 / DISCOUNT $59.50**
**Discount passes can only be purchased and used by:
Seniors, over 65, high school students 18 and under, children, ages 9 to 12, disabled persons with a valid transit disability ID card. Rates subject to change without notice.
LU Radio
As a community-based campus radio station, LU Radio is mandated to provide music and spoken word (talk) that is generally not heard on commercial radio stations. Requirements include a minimum percentage of underrepresented music categories, spoken word (talk), and alternative language programming.
As a not-for-profit organization, we welcome charitable donations and rely on volunteers for a large portion of the work completed at the station. If you have ideas about what you would like to hear on LU Radio, get involved! To make donations or volunteer, contact us at 343-8881. The Argus
The Argus is a student funded newspaper, produced and distributed weekly exclusively for the students of Lakehead University. Every week The Argus strives to cover stories that pertain to students, both on the local and international level. It’s always a challenge to find a balance between thought provoking stories and entertaining pieces of information.
While The Argus staff is comprised of a talented team of twelve editors and managers, input, ideas and suggestions from the student body is always appreciated. If you want to contribute, simply send your contact information along with a brief message to www.theargus.ca. We are always looking for inspiration, and anything you can contribute would be great, whether it be writing, photography, drawing cartoons or just sending in some story ideas that you think we should cover.
We are your student paper, and thus we are responsible to you and want your input, so don’t be afraid to tell us what you like or what we are doing wrong. Pick up your free copy of The Argus every Monday at one the the various locations around campus or swing by the office to grab one!
Ombudsperson
The Ombudsoffice at Lakehead University is an impartial, independent and confidential support service provided to ensure that students and members of the University community receive fair and equitable treatment. The Ombudsperson deals with a variety of issues and complaints, and provides information for both academic and non-academic concerns. The primary objective of the Ombudsoffice is to ensure all University members’ rights are protected and that all individuals are dealt with in a fair and equitable manner. The Bike Shack
The Bike Shack is a spacious LUSU facility where you can hang your bike and lock it up safely. The building is open and monitored 24 hours a day by camera and heated in the winter.
The Hangar
The accurately named “HANGAR” is a great place to get active all year round! A full size track, playing field with realistic turf, indoor rock climbing wall, work-out centre, yoga room and the Lakehead Physiotherapy Centre are all inside this awesome facility. You can also sign-up for one of the many great activities in the Hangar through campus recreation. These include, soccer, football and even yoga classes.
