Gender Equity Centre Coordinator

Term: August 2022- April 2023

Type: Contract

Hours: 30 hours/week

Pay: $20.00/hour, bi-weekly


The Gender Equity Centre Coordinator is the manager of the Gender Equity Centre at the Lakehead University Student Union and is responsible for its day-to-day operations. They are to provide a safe and inclusive space on campus that empowers, respects and supports people who are experiencing oppression related to sex and gender among other forms of oppression.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and facilitate the day-to-day operations of the centre

  • Provide support, referral, and crisis intervention for individuals with respect to gender, race, class, ability, privilege, heterosexism, sexual assault, physical or emotional abuse and harassment, parenting, relationships, and sex.

  • Advocate and lobby within the university and Thunder Bay community in order to raise awareness of social issues affecting students.

  • Supervise volunteers and staff of the centre, including hiring, training, and termination of centre staff.

  • Plan, develop, and implement the development of educational campaigns related to gender and social justice, including breast cancer awareness, women’s history month, violence against women, sexual consent, and international women’s day.

  • Develop and execute regular events, including Take Back the Night and Gender F@#%ed.

  • Develop, plan and implement events for social connection of students. 

  • Promote the centre, its services, and all campaigns both within the university and the community at-large.

  • Manage the centre’s budget and ensure that all expenditures are within it.

  • Apply for appropriate funding and grants in order to augment the campaigns and programming of the centre.

  • Prepare and offer presentations on varying issues related to the mandate of the centre to interested groups both on and off campus, including by locating relevant speakers or presenters.

  • Develop and manage the centre resource library by locating books, articles, pamphlets, magazines, DVDs, and other media relevant to centre.  Assist patrons in locating appropriate resources.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with Lakehead University student services, such as the Student Health and Wellness, Residence Life, Student Success Centre, and related departments such as Women’s Studies, Sociology, English, and Education.

  • Submit regular reports to the LUSU Board of Directors.

  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Priority will be given to applicants from the student population;

  • Familiarity with and passionate about the mandate of the Gender Equity Centre;

  • Demonstrates professionalism, strong communication skills, and leadership;

  • An understanding of and willingness to learn about current issues regarding challenges faced by marginalized students through gender and related oppression. 

  • Experience in engaging, recruiting, and coordinating volunteers;

  • Experience on social justice campaigns including those relating to the gender equity community is an asset, as is knowledge of anti-oppressive practices;

  • Ability to work independently or cooperatively with others;

  • Digital skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Instagram, and Canva.
