Pride Central Coordinator

Term: August 2022- April 2023

Hours: 30 hours/week

Pay: $20.00/hour, bi-weekly

Pride Central is a student-led and funded service centre operated by the Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU). The Centre is open to all Members and aims to be a safe(r) space for Lakehead students of all gender identities and sexual orientations through education, advocacy, and support.

The Pride Central Coordinator is the manager of the Pride Central centre at the Lakehead University Student Union and is responsible for its day-to-day operations. They are to engage students and ensure the centre is a safe space where students can pursue personal and educational issues that concern sexual orientation and gender identity.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Oversee and facilitate the day-to-day operations of the centre

• Provide support, referral, and crisis intervention for individuals who have been victimized through harassment, assault, or abuse with respect to sexual orientation or gender identity.

• Advocate and lobby within the university and Thunder Bay community in order to raise awareness of queer and transgender issues.

• Supervise volunteers and staff of the centre, including hiring, training, and termination of centre staff.

• Plan, develop, and implement the development of educational campaigns related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

• Promote the centre, its services, and all campaigns both within the university and the community at-large.

• Plan, develop and implement events for social connection of students.

• Prepare and offer presentations on varying issues related to the mandate of the centre to interested groups both on and off campus, including by locating relevant speakers or presenters.

• Develop and manage the centre resource library by locating books, articles, pamphlets, magazines, DVDs, and other media relevant to the queer and transgender community.  Assist patrons in locating appropriate resources.

• Manage the centre’s budget and ensure that all expenditures are within it.

• Develop and maintain relationships with Lakehead University student services, such as the Student Health and Counselling Centre, Residence Life, Student Success Centre, and related departments such as Women’s Studies, Sociology, English, and Education.

• Submit regular reports to the LUSU Board of Directors.

• Organize and execute Pride in the North

• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience:

• Priority will be given to LGBTQ2S+  applicants from the student population;

• Familiarity with and passionate about the mandate of Pride Central;

• Demonstrates professionalism, strong communication skills, and leadership;

• An understanding of and willingness to learn about current issues regarding gender identity and expression, and sexual orientation;

• Experience in engaging, recruiting, and coordinating volunteers;

• Experience on social justice campaigns including those relating to the LGBTQ2S+ community is an asset, as is knowledge of anti-oppressive practices;

• Ability to work independently or cooperatively with others;

• Digital skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Instagram, and Canva.
