Salary: $16.00 /hour, paid bi-weekly
The Food Resource Centre (FRC) provides short-term emergency food to Lakehead University students in need and explores long-term solutions to combat food insecurity at Lakehead University. In addition, the Food Resource Centre strives to destigmatize accessing food support, stimulate conversations about factors affecting food (in)security, healthy eating and barriers, and implement solutions and partnerships with stakeholders to make Lakehead University a more food-secure campus.
The Lakehead University Student Union’s (LUSU) is looking for a passionate, responsible and engaged student to hire as the Thunder Bay Sustainable Foods Assistant. This person will work closely with the LUSU Food Resource Centre Coordinator to plan and implement engaging programming for the upcoming school term and aid in running the Centre’s daily operations. This person will also lead sustainability programming within the Food Resource Centre.
Roles and Responsibilities
Lead sustainability programming out of the Food Resource Centre
Become knowledgeable through training on various resources and aspects of LUSU and Lakehead University
Assist in day-to-day operations of the Centre
Assist in volunteer recruitment and supervision of volunteers
Assist with the organization, preparation, implementation, and evaluation of programs and events such as but not limited to: People’s Potato weekly lunch, Chopped U Cooking Classes and Faculty Food Drive
Work with the Food Resource Centre Coordinator to advocate and lobby within the University and Thunder Bay community in order to raise awareness of food insecurity among students and in the community
Additional responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications and Experience:
Well informed on the topic of sustainability and what that means in relation to food and the food system
Passionate about the issue of food insecurity
Well informed on the topic of food insecurity and possible solutions (e.i. Importance of moving beyond charitable approaches and advocating for larger change)
Successful applicants must be familiar with LUSU’s mandate, and will be willing to learn, adapt, and be flexible
Enthusiastic about connecting with students in-person
Experience in engaging and recruiting and coordinating volunteers
Customer service experience is ideal
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse groups of people.
Ability to work independently
Experience with Google Drive features, and strong email and Internet skills
Strong communication skills; both written and verbal
Have basic knowledge of LUSU’s services and supports.
Must be available to work onsite as scheduled
